Ambassador's Lecture: Ethiopia's Strategic Role in BRICS+ and the Global South

On April 25, 2025, the London Office of the Andalus Committee, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Embassy in London, had the great honour of co-hosting a conversation with H.E. Biruk Mekonnen, Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United Kingdom.

As the fourth event of the Andalus Global South Dialogue, our discussion explored Ethiopia’s vision for the emerging multipolar world, its recent integration into BRICS+, and key regional issues. Questions from our members touched on the need for African strategic autonomy amidst global geopolitical shifts, investment opportunities in Ethiopia, and building resilience against climate change. We will particularly remember Ambassador Mekonnen’s inspiring words: "our best resilience is our people."

We are also thrilled to announce the forthcoming opening of our Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Research Center, which is currently recruiting its first members. Ethiopia — home to the African Union, a historic symbol of resistance to imperialism, and a new BRICS member — will be a cornerstone of our future research initiatives.

A heartfelt thank you to Ambassador Mekonnen, the Ethiopian Embassy, and all participants for their invaluable presence and insightful questions. We remain deeply committed to identifying opportunities for Africa in a rapidly changing world order!
