This policy report, released by the Andalus Committee's London Office, examines the United Kingdom's strategic reorientation following the 2016 Brexit referendum and the opportunities this presents for deepening ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It analyses the diplomatic, economic, and technological dimensions of the UK's 'Global Britain' strategy, with a particular focus on the Indo-Pacific tilt and ASEAN's growing significance as a partner region. The report explores key drivers of bilateral potential, including the UK's landmark achievement of ASEAN Dialogue Partner status in 2021, its CPTPP membership, and ASEAN's strategic interest in diversifying its economic partnerships beyond major powers such as the United States and China. It concludes with four interlinked policy recommendations to negotiate a multilateral UK-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, establish a technology-sharing partnership to develop refinery processing expertise across the region, and expand university-industry collaboration to strengthen supply chain resilience and reinforce the UK's soft power presence in the Indo-Pacific.
